Given numbers {3, 8, a, 17, b}
Sum of the numbers = 28+a+b
Because b = 3a
Sum of the numbers = 28+4a
Average of the numbers = (28+4a)/5
We have been asked if (28+4a)/5 < 8
Or 28+4a < 40
Or 4a < 12
Or a < 3
(1) a > 2
a can be 2.5 or a can be 3.5
Insufficient
(2) a² < 9
a will be between (-3, 3)
a will be less than 3
Sufficient
Hence, only Statement 2 is sufficient, option B.
