If it takes Josh 18 minutes to do 54 math problems and he continues working at the same rate, how long will it take him to do 81 problems?

A. 18 minutes
B. 27 minutes
C. 36 minutes
D. 54 minutes
E. 1 hour 21 minutes

We can set up a simple proportion to determine how long it will take Josh to complete 81 math problems. Be sure to put the numbers in the correct positions in each fraction of the proportion, in this case the number of problems in the numerator and the number of minutes in the denominator for each fraction:

54 problems/18 minutes = 81 problems/x minutes

54/18 = 81/x

3 = 81/x

x = 81/3 = 27 minutes

Note that you also could have set up the proportion as:

18 minutes/54 problems = x minutes/81 problems

and the answer would be the same. Be sure to match up the units in the fractions of proportion problems.
