If the average (arithmetic mean) of x, y, and z is 20, which of the following is the value of z in terms of x and y?

A. 20 - x - y
B. 20 + x + y
C. 40 - x - y
D. 40 + x + y
E. 60 - x - y

The average (arithmetic mean) of x, y, and z is 20
We can write: (x + y + z)/3 = 20
Multiply both sides by 3 to get: x + y + z = 60

Which of the following is the value of z in terms of x and y
Take: x + y + z = 60
Subtract x from both sides to get: y + z = 60 - x
Subtract y from both sides to get: z = 60 - x - y

Answer: E
