If the dog is a collie, it will shed its downy undercoat only in the spring. The dog shed in the spring, so it must be a collie.
The format of the logic here is: if A happens, then B follows. B has happened; therefore, A must have happened before.

Which one of the following selections demonstrates the same reasoning presented in the passage ?
A) In the winter time in the mountains, it frequently snows. Three inches of snow fell last night, so it must be winter.
The format here is loosely the same. The problem here is twofold:
(i) We don't know if it snows only in the winter (the dog does only shed in the spring).
(ii) Snowfall of three inches last night doesn't say anything about its recent frequency.
So, A doesn't fit the bill.

B) When the wind sweeps down from the mountains, a cold front will follow right behind. Right now the winds are gusting up to 40 mph, so a cold front must be on its way.
The format here is not the same. Instead, it is: if A happens, then B follows. A has happened; therefore, B must follow soon.
So, B is out.

C) The crystal paperweights in Sharon's paperweight collection are always dusted very carefully. The red paperweight is not handled carefully when dusted, so it must not be a crystal paperweight.
This one is interesting, and you need to re-arrange the thoughts a bit here. The concept is:
If paperweights are crystal, they are dusted carefully. This paperweight is not dusted carefully, so it must not be a crystal paperweight.
The format here is: if A happens, then B follows. B has NOT happened; therefore, A must NOT have happened before.
As you can see, the format is different. So, C is out too!

D) One more hard frost would kill the tomato plants. But a week later, the tomato plants were still alive. Therefore, a hard frost must not have occurred within the last week.
Similar to C, the format is: if A happens, then B follows. B has NOT happened; therefore, A must NOT have happened before.
Not the same. D is out.

E) One must be very coordinated like Franklin to be a good drummer. However, Franklin's inability to read music will prevent him from being a good drummer.
Rephrase: if one is coordinated, he/she will be a good drummer. Franklin cannot read music; therefore, he cannot be a good drummer.
Format: if A happens, then B follows. C has not happened; therefore, B will not follow.
Totally different logic. Totally different format.
Conclusion: None of the selections demonstrates the same reasoning presented in the passage. A comes the closest.
