Let x be the sales tax rate.

$12*x/100= 0.66 Solving x=22/4% For$20,
22/4*20/100=$1.10 Sent from my iPhone using GMAT Club Forum _________________ Help with kudos if u found the post useful. Let x be the sales tax rate.$12*x/100= 0.66
Solving x=66/12 . . . . . (1)
which is slightly more than 66/11 which in simplified form is 6 . . . ..(2)
Since on comparing (1) with (2)
(1) is having higher denominator my fraction will be slightly smaller than (2)
So x could be closer to 5.8 or 5.9

Now closest value when multiplied with $20 which is closest to , but smaller than 6 gives final value as something just very close but smaller than 1.2, which is (D) _________________ It's the journey that brings us happiness not the destination. Let's say sales tax is x% so 12*x%=0.66 => x%=0.66/12 So sales tax on$20 will be 20*x%=20*0.66/12=1.1

You will get the answer directly. no need to approximate

Where am I faltering in approximation here?

Let x be the sales tax rate.

$12*x/100= 0.66 Solving x=66/12 . . . . . (1) which is slightly more than 66/11 which in simplified form is 6 . . . ..(2) Since on comparing (1) with (2) (1) is having higher denominator my fraction will be slightly smaller than (2) So x could be closer to 5.8 or 5.9 Now closest value when multiplied with$20 which is closest to , but smaller than 6

there is no need to approximate

try the unitary method

12 - 0.66
20 - ? (x)

x= $$\frac{20*0.66}{12}$$ = $$\frac{10*0.66}{6}$$ = 10x.11 = 1.1

approximate when there are no values given
hope this helps

If we let n = the sales tax on the 20 dollar purchase, we can create a proportion and solve for n:

0.66/12 = n/20

20 x 0.66 = 12n

13.2 = 12n

13.2/12 = n

1.1 = n

Thus, the sales tax is $1.10.
