This is a classic example of a problem that can be solved using the 2x2 matrix method.
The rows can have - Campus and Off Campus and the columns can have Men and Women.

Given data - Total women - 400 and off campus students (irrespective of gender) - 200.

Statement 1 - 120 women live off campus - Clearly meaning that 80 men live off campus. Now if there are 400 women then the Campus living women will be 280. But that is all we can get. We have no hint of the men living on campus and hence there is no idea of the total students. Options A and D are gone.

Statement 2 - This statement independently does not give any information that can help get overall students number. Option B is out.

Now, Assume that men who live on campus is x. So the 2nd statement can be framed as follows - (280+x)/2 will be equal to x+80. Solving for x will give you men living on campus and hence the 2x2 table is full giving the number of students overall.

Correct Answer - Option C - Both are required.

If there are 400 women at College X and 200 students live off-campus, how many students does College X have?

(1) 120 women live off-campus.
(2) There are half as many men at College X as there are students who live on-campus.


i'm very confused Bunuel please help me

i think we can all agree that the initial problem says something like this:

statement 1

NOT SUFFICIENT

statement 2
clearly states that (men at college X) is EQUAL to ( 1/2 the number of students who live on-campus)
THUS:
(X-400) = 1/2(X-200)

thus X = 600

why i cannot say that?
