Question: Whar is the value of x?

Statement 1: x < 0

x may still be -1 or -5 hence

NOT SUFFICIENT

Statement 2: x^2 + 6x + 5 = 0

i.e. (x+5)*(x+1) = 0
i.e. x = -5 or -1
x may still be -1 or -5 hence

NOT SUFFICIENT

Answer: Option E

    As all we're given is equations, we'll work with them.
    This is a Precise approach.

    |x + 3 |= 2 simplifies to x = -1 or x = -5.
    (1) x<0 does not help us separate between the two.
    Insufficient!

    (2) x^2 + 6x + 5 = 0 simplifies into (x+5)(x+1) = 0 so x = -1 or x = -5. This still does not help us separate the two options.
    Insufficient!

    Combined:
    We have no new information and cannot separate the two answers.

    (E) is our answer.
