x/y = 2.... eqn 1

(x - y)/y = z ... eqn 2

From 1.
x = 2y .... eqn 3

Putting 2 into 3

(2y - y)/y = y/y = z

Therefore, z = 1 (D)

GMATPrepNow Also got D but OA is C, any insight?

if \(\frac{x}{y} = 2\), then \(\frac{(x-y)}{y}\) =

(A) \(-1\)
(B) \(-\frac{1}{2}\)
(C) \(\frac{1}{2}\)
(D) \(1\)
(E) \(2\)

APPROACH #1: Use the fact that (a - b)/c = a/b - b/c
So, (x - y)/y = x/y - y/y
= x/y - 1
= 2 - 1
= 1
Answer: D

APPROACH #2: Plug in values.
If x/y = 2, then it could be the case that x = 6 and y = 3
So, (x - y)/y = (6 - 3)/3
= 3/3
= 1
Answer: D

Brent

I think the OP may have entered the wrong answer.

If \(\frac{x}{y} = 2\), then \(\frac{(x-y)}{y}\) =

(A) \(-1\)

(B) \(-\frac{1}{2}\)

(C) \(\frac{1}{2}\)

(D) \(1\)

(E) \(2\)

Let's rewrite the expression \(\frac{(x - y)}{y}\) as follows:

\(\Rightarrow \frac{(x - y)}{y}\)
\(\Rightarrow \frac{x}{y} - \frac{y}{y}\)
\(\Rightarrow \frac{x}{y} - 1\)

Now, substituting \(\frac{x}{y} = 2\), we see that the given expression is equal to 2 - 1 = 1.
