Hi Aanshi,

Many GMATers find RC to be challenging - so you're not alone. Thankfully, that area of the Verbal section (and the entire Verbal section, for that matter) is as consistent and predictable as the Quant section is, but Verbal questions have no 'safety net' - meaning that if you make a little mistake or miss a vital piece of information, then you will convince yourself that one of the wrong answers is correct (and not realize it). Before I can offer you the specific advice that you’re looking for, it would help if you could provide a bit more information on how you've been studying and your goals:

Studies:
1) How long have you studied? How many hours do you typically study each week?
2) What study materials have you used so far? What “brands” of CATs/mocks have you used?
3) On what dates (or approximate dates) did you take EACH of your CATs/mocks and how did you score on EACH (including the Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores for EACH)?

Goals:
4) What is your overall goal score?
5) When are you planning to apply to Business School and what Schools are you planning to apply to?

GMAT assassins aren't born, they're made,

Hi Aanshi.

Are you doing the practice questions timed or untimed?

Often people who are having trouble mastering a type of verbal question aren't spending enough time on each question to really figure out what's going on with each choice and arrive at the correct answer. So, they aren't really practicing the steps that lead to success.

If that's you, the key is to stick with each RC question until you are virtually CERTAIN that your choice is the correct answer for very clear reasons that you have discovered.

For an in-depth discussion of how to practice for verbal, see this post.

I have been solving LSAT RC passages for a month now- 3 to 4 passages everyday, for 5 days a week. My struggle with inference based questions (specifically main point of the passage, structure of the passage, and purpose of the passage) is real. Instead of practicing RC everyday and reviewing questions individually, I am now thinking to review the strategy that I use to solve these type of questions. Clearly, I am struggling to identify what is it- that I keep doing wrong.

Here is my strategy:
I make very short notes- mapping the passage. Absorbing one paragraph at a time, these notes I make usually match the summary given by experts. So I think I am able to often understand the passage if I take my time to read it carefully. I read for purpose (still suck at purpose based question). Also, I am able to usually eliminate options to a point where I have only two answer choices- and I almost always end up selecting the wrong option! XD Then finally, I hit my head and move on. The next day, I take my time to review these questions and go through the expert's advice and explanations on the questions I got wrong before solving RC passages for that day.

I have watched many youtube videos by GMATNinja to develop a system for RC and I try my best to religiously follow Charles' advice.
I have reached a point where I don't see myself improving. Frustrated and desperate... I need some expert advice on how to go about this.
If there are any formulas for these questions please let me know... There are any books/materials I should read, let me know. If I should keep torturing myself this way, let me know... If there is absolutely anything you think I am doing wrong, let me know.

My exam is on 11th November so I have approximately 45 days (excluding the Diwali holidays) to fix this issue. So any and every type of criticism/help/suggestion you have for me, let me know.
Hi Aanshi,

This post may not be very helpful, but there is no one strategy that works for everyone, and you probably shouldn't worry too much about tactics that you don't find anywhere except in test prep material. In other words, don't try to prioritise things like tactics/strategies over good old practice. The test prep industry has not, unfortunately, discovered some secret new way of improving basic reading comprehension skills.

Keep in mind that RC is, at the end of the day, just (a) reading and (b) comprehension.

Hi Aanshi.

Are you doing the practice questions timed or untimed?

Hello Marty!
Thanks for sharing the link. I just finished watching that video. I understood the passage discussed and most importantly- I got the purpose of the passage correct! I like your rational and objective approach to solving RC.
I have been doing LSAT RC passages untimed with a study buddy. I definitely took that advice from you... from one of your videos with DCummins, on his YouTube channel. Absolutely loved that video; its my go-to video, whenever I feel defeated by GMAT. Your view about the psychological impact that GMAT has on people is on point.
I am working from home and studying for the GMAT. Living here, in my home town (small city in India), with my parents, without a social life, tends to get frustrating and lonely at times... But that video genuinely helped me... So thank you sooo much!

Coming back to RC, I would like to know more about the difference between the main point of the passage and the purpose of the passage. As per my understanding, 'main point' of the passage answers the 'What' aspect, and could be narrow. Whereas 'the purpose' of the passage answers the 'Why' aspect.
Can you please correct me if I am wrong and clarify on this a bit further.

I Definitely agree with you. I have now started to see, though not significant, some improvements.
I guess I will have to keep torturing myself like this everyday. :D
Thanks for letting me know.

What you're saying is basically correct.

We could say that the primary purpose of the passage is to present the main point, which is the primary point communicated by the passage as a whole.
