GMAT Prep actually uses a different algorithm/methodology from the actual test. The two grade the tests in a similar way/fashion but they are different. There is a number of reasons for this (which I don't even know all of them) but the main ones are:
- Experimental questions - GMAT Prep does not have them
- Anti-cheating protections that official test has such as someone answering questions corrently within seconds or unusual patterns
- Official algorithm is pretty closely guarded so GMAC did not want to put it out there for someone to reverse engineer it
- GMAT prep and its algorithm have not been updated in a number of years (like 5 i think) while I am guessing GMAC keeps the official test much more current in terms of scoring methodology
P.S. you will never know which questions are experimental, so don't worry about that part. Just try to do your best on each question without spending too much time on any of them.
