Hello Experts,
I was doing some mock test from Kaplan and I got the question above. Their explanation is very silly affirming the "wordiness" but i was able to eliminate some of them. Is there a better explanation of why the others are incorrect/ and the B is correct?

Maybe I can be of help. First of all this is a comparison question.
We need appropriate comparison for 4 percent of their weekly earnings on gasoline. The only option which fits is B. Rest of the options is not logical to compare.
I am not comfortable with the use of had increased though.

It took me 26 seconds to mark B
Question is a typical one. It compares two figures one from comparatively older observation.
Use of "Had" is proper in such cases. It talks about an action completed in the past and not a sequence of events.
Such is also not problematic here; had we not been talking about "proportion" using percentages here, anything such as figure or number could have done. Only option B makes a logical comparison between two observations.
