This option makes it seems like the warnings from the locals happened only in 1992, which clearly is not the intended meaning of the author. The author wants to say that Christopher McCandless started to live off the land in Alaska in the year 1992, not that the locals warned him in 1992 about the dangers involved in this feat he was trying to accomplish.
C) In 1992, despite the locals’ warnings that trying to survive in the wilderness without supplies often spells an untimely, foolish death, Christopher McCandless still initiated his ill-fated attempt to live off the land in Alaska

In option C- "Despite" and "still" are redundant in the same sentence. Moreover, though not sure, I would prefer modifier "1992" close to "CM initiated his ill-fated attempt. Please correct me if i am wrong.
