Note: The number of male voters or female voters cannot be a fraction.

St1: Among the voters, whose votes are valid. 79% of the male voters and 43 % of the female voters voted in favour of X. There can be either
200 male and 100 female --> In favor of X = 158 + 43 = 201
or
100 male and 200 female --> In favor of X = 79 + 86 = 165
In either of the cases, X wins.
Sufficient.

St2: The ratio of male to female in the city is 2:1 --> Clearly insufficient as we do not know who voted for whom.

Statement 1:let's say total male voters are a

total votes for X= 79*a/100 +43(300-a)/100
As 79 is a prime number, so a must be divisible to 100(a can be 100 or 200)
In either case --when a will be 100 or 200
number of votes for X will be more than 150.

So, statement 1 is sufficient to say that X won the election

statement 2: ratio of male to female does not tell who (x or Y) got more votes. Not sufficient

Correct answer is A

I think the important thing to note here is that 79 % = a positive integer and the minimum value for it =79 , which makes total valid male votes = 100
and females = 200
minimum number of votes X will get = 79 + 86 = 165 out of 300
so A is sufficient
