Hi,
First things first — it’s okay. Since you’re already working, there’s no need to panic. CAT didn’t go well, that happens. You can absolutely prepare again, but this time you can look at GMAT or GRE.
There are multiple videos on the GMAT Club YouTube channel that clearly explain the difference between MiM programs and MBA programs. You should definitely check them out. Generally (and this is just a common opinion), people recommend doing an MBA after 5 years of work experience, but honestly, it’s not a hard rule.
If you can clearly answer “Why MBA?”, then you are eligible to apply and should consider it seriously.
My two cents:
Start by giving a GMAT or GRE mock test — whichever exam you feel you might perform better in. This will give you a realistic idea of your potential score and also help you understand which MiM or MBA colleges you can target.
You should aim for pre / Round 1 of the 2026 intake — it’s a perfect timeline. Once you have a score, attend college fairs, prepare a list of questions (both personal and college/program-specific), and talk to admissions teams.
Keep preparing and work on improving your score. Do not leave your job until you have an admit in hand. This entire process takes time — around 6–12 months. By then, you’ll have 36+ months of work experience, which is actually a sweet spot for both MiM and MBA applications.
Feel free to ping me personally if you want to discuss this further.
