Could someone help me understand how option A is an opposite of option E ? For me they both meant the same, with option A being a little more moderate of the two.

Hi Easaw_George ,

I am happy to help.

Look at the explanation I have given above.

We are told 1st preference is given to food and then to softness while A is saying preference for food = preference for softness. This is opposite to what the argument is saying. Hence, A is out.

While option E is clearly saying what I mentioned in my previous post.

Hence, E is correct.

Does that make sense?

In a study, infant monkeys given a choice between [#permalink]

In a study, infant monkeys given a choice between two surrogate mothers―a bare wire structure equipped with a milk bottle, or a soft, suede-covered wire structure equipped with a milk bottle―unhesitatingly chose the latter. When given a choice between a bare wire structure equipped with a milk bottle and a soft, suede-covered wire structure lacking a milk bottle, they unhesitatingly chose the former.

Which one of the following is most supported by the information above?

A. Infant monkeys' desire for warmth and comfort is nearly as strong as their desire for food.
B. For infant monkeys, suede is a less convincing substitute for their mother's touch than animal fur would be.
C. For infant monkeys, a milk bottle is a less convincing substitute for their mother's teat than suede is for their mother's touch.
D. For infant monkeys, a milk bottle is an equally convincing substitute for their mother's teat as suede is for their mother's touch.
E. Infant monkeys' desire for food is stronger than their desire for warmth and comfort.

E is best choice here ..
Monkeys decision changes because of milk (food)....

Re: In a study, infant monkeys given a choice between [#permalink]
Option (E) can be considered the correct answer based on the information provided in the study. The study presents a scenario in which infant monkeys were given a choice between two surrogate mothers:

A bare wire structure equipped with a milk bottle (providing food).
A soft, suede-covered wire structure (providing comfort but no food).
The key finding is that the infant monkeys unhesitatingly chose the surrogate mother with the milk bottle, even though it was a less comfortable option. This suggests that their desire for food (nourishment) was stronger or more immediate than their desire for warmth and comfort. They were willing to forgo the comfort of the suede-covered surrogate for the essential need for nourishment from the milk bottle.

So, option (E) correctly reflects the information from the study, indicating that the infant monkeys prioritize their desire for food over their desire for warmth and comfort.
