In a study of more than,8,000 people using ten beaches on two of the Great Lakes, ecologists from the University of Toronto detennined that the rate of respiratory and gastrointestinal illness among people who had been swimming was 69.6 per 1,000, whereas the respiratory and gastrointestinal illness rate among those who had not been swimming was only 29.5 per 1,000.

Which of the following conclusions can be most properly drawn from the data above?

(A) People tend to underestimate the risks of swimming in these lakes.
(B) Respiratory and gastrointestinal illnesses occur at a higher rate as a result of swimming in either of these lakes than they do as a result of swimming in any other lake.
(C) Illnesses of kinds other than respiratory and gastrointestinal are not likely to be associated with swimming in either of these lakes.
(D) The association between swimming in these lakes and respiratory and gastrointestinal illnesses is evidence of a causal relationship between them.
(E) A large percentage of the people who swim in these lakes are immune to the diseases that swimming may cause.

Kudos for the right answer and explanation
The only conclusion that can be draw is D.

A is out of scope as we are not concerned by risk of swimming.
B We do not want comparison of consequence of swimming in two different lakes.
C We have to concern ourselves about the disease mentioned in he argument.
D correct we are given "rate of respiratory and gastrointestinal illness among people who had been swimming was 69.6 per 1,000 and gastrointestinal illness rate among those who had not been swimming was only 29.5 per 1,000. So it seems likely that folks who swam suffered from diseases because of swimming
E Well they are well deserved but this choice is no good.

you said "seemed" but isn't conclusion is something that can be proven by data given in above Statements?
Please correct me if I am wrong and if there is difference between conclusion and inference.

Hi Itoy,

Rightly said. Conclusion are proven or supported by premises and facts, but conclusion can be debated and it is no a fact that can not be questioned into.
Inference is the point that we can refer from the argument or the premises only with out taking any new information. Inference has to be followed from argument 100 percent and they are true.
