I, too, think that it is E. If the pro singer's employment is to continue, the assumption has to be that they helped make patrons more confident. If patrons became "more" confident, they must have been not as confident before. Therefore, we must be dealing with largely the same group of patrons.

shankk
I believe it's E, as the conclusion assumes that the guests who came on the second day had at least some of the same members as the guests on the first day and doesn't take into account the fact that the guests on the second day could've just been more confident people in general.

Is this correct?

(E) The discomfort diminished in the returning customer is an assumption because if these were not returning customers than it means the people who felt discomfort are not returning which means it is not a good idea to employee a professional singer
Bunuel
In a well-known karaoke club, a professional singer was hired to assist guests who had trouble staying in tune with the songs they were attempting to sing. On the first night, this caused discomfort to many of the guests who upon hearing their voices alongside that of the professional, suddenly lost confidence and felt embarrassed. On the second night, the number of singing guests who felt embarrassed by the professional's assistance was lower. Therefore, the club should not cease the employment of the professional singer, as in time the guests' discomfort will have diminished completely.

The author's conclusion relies on which of the following assumptions?

(A) The popularity of a karaoke club does not depend on the standard of vocal capability displayed by the guests.
(B) Employing a professional singer is not necessarily expensive.
(C) The suggestion to hire a professional singer was first made by the guests themselves.
(D) The guests' discomfort is caused by low self-esteem and a habit of comparing themselves with others.
(E) Most of the guests visiting the club are returning customers.

Option E mentions the returning customer, that doesn???t necessarily mean they are given the same professional singers to match their vocal frequency. Plz clarify

There is mention of only one professional singer in the question, not multiple. The situation is - one pro, multiple customers, and not multiple pros, multiple customers. One pro assigned to/provided for the customers.

Agree with @tde312's response. The passage only talks about a professional singer, not multiple. There is nothing mentioned in the passage about vocal frequency. Basically the idea is that only if the customers are returning can we evaluate the discomfort over time to draw the above conclusion. If we negate E), most of the guests visiting the club are not returning customers, then the conclusion will break because the discomfort wouldn't have diminished completely.

There is a well known karaoke club, where professional singers where hired to assists guests who had trouble staying in tune with the songs when they attempt to sing. During day 1, the guests experienced discomfort when they heard their voices along side with the professional, they felt embarrassed and lost confidence.

On Day 2, the discomfort was lower among most number of singing guests.

Therefore, the club should not stop employing professional singers, as the discomfort experienced by the guests might diminish completely. What’s the assumption on the conclusion mentioned above ?

(A) The popularity of a karaoke club does not depend on the standard of vocal capability displayed by the guests.

Option A is wrong, as the popularity is not of context in the question stem.

(B) Employing a professional singer is not necessarily expensive.

Option B speaks about the pricing of the professional singer, this is not relevant to the question stem . Hence wrong

(C) The suggestion to hire a professional singer was first made by the guests themselves.

Option C which speaks about who initiated the hiring of the professional singer, but the question begins with mentioning professional singers only for those who had trouble to sync with the karaoke music. Hence, wrong.

(D) The guests' discomfort is caused by low self-esteem and a habit of comparing themselves with others.

Option D which speaks about the discomfort is caused by the low self esteem and habit of comparison, which will gradually reduce from the guests end. As breaking the ice will thaw the atmosphere and enable conducive environment. Hence correct.

(E) Most of the guests visiting the club are returning customers.

Option E which says the frequency of customers returning back to the same, the underlying theme is since they return frequently they develop a good rapport with the professional singer. No where, in the question stem is mentioned that there exists a one to one relationship with them, or frequency of visiting will nullify the discomfort. Hence wrong.

Option D
ok so for that awkwardness to go away, one needs to have several meetings. As the argument claims second day to be less awkward to the customers, for this to be true, regular or returning customers is a must.

option D is not a better option as it is supporting the premise stated in the argument rather than strenghthening the conclusion as well as filling the gap between stated premise and conclusion
which is satisfised by option E

Official Explanation

Incorrect.

To solve this Assumption question, first break down the argument. Sentences 1, 2, and 3 present factual information about events that actually occurred, so they are the premises of the argument. Sentence 4 uses the conclusion conjunction Therefore so we can be sure that it is the author's conclusion.

Now ask yourself: the author believes that the singer should not be fired because at some point the guests will stop being embarrassed. What assumption has the author made from the premises presented by the argument, to reach this conclusion?

The factors affecting the popularity of a karaoke club are irrelevant. Although it may seem logically connected to the argument, this answer choice presents new data instead of providing a reason for how the author reached the conclusion that he or she did.

(B) Employing a professional singer is not necessarily expensive.

Incorrect.

Since the topic of money is not mentioned in the argument, the costs involved in hiring a singer are irrelevant. Although it may seem logically connected to the argument, this answer choice presents new data instead of providing a reason for how the author reached the conclusion that he did.

(C) The suggestion to hire a professional singer was first made by the guests themselves.

Incorrect.

This answer choice presents a new premise about the employment of the singer. Although it may seem connected to the argument somehow, we are not interested in support for the conclusion; what we are looking for is the assumption, which should explain how the author drew the conclusion based on the existing premises.

(D) The guests' discomfort is caused by low self-esteem and a habit of comparing themselves with others.

Incorrect.

This answer choice presents a new premise about the psychology behind publicly performing. Although it may seem to be connected to the argument, we are not interested in support for or objections to the conclusion; what we are looking for is the assumption, which should explain how the author drew the conclusion based on the existing premises.

(E) Most of the guests visiting the club are returning customers.

The premises tell us that from one night to the next, the number of embarrassed guests decreased. However, if the guests were not the same, this difference was created simply by chance. To conclude that the guests' embarrassment is actually diminishing over time, the author must assume that most of the guests are the same people, who slowly feel less discomfort every time they sing at the club.
