In addition to relieving stress and building strength, certain yoga poses instigate the onset of peristaltic pulses in the small intestine, just as peristaltic pumps do, and these have a purgative effect like a laxative’s.

[A] certain yoga poses instigate the onset of peristaltic pulses in the small intestine, just as peristaltic pumps do, and these have a purgative effect like a laxative’s
[B] certain yoga poses instigate the onset of peristaltic pulses in the small intestine, like a peristaltic pump, and they have a purgative effect that is like a laxative
[C] certain yoga poses and peristaltic pumps both instigate the onset of peristaltic pulses in the small intestine, and they have a purgative effect like a laxative
[D] the onset of peristaltic pulses in the small intestine is instigated both by certain yoga poses and peristaltic pumps, and they have a purgative effect like a laxative’s
[E] the onset of peristaltic pulses in the small intestine is instigated by certain yoga poses, just as with peristaltic pumps, and these have a purgative effect like that of a laxative

Observe the 3:2 split between ABC and DE.
"Relieving stress and building strength" are works done by something. So in addition to some objects, only objects will be added not the subject.
ABC are wrong IMO.
Among D and E, D alters the meaning and uses "they" ambigously.
+1 E.
I doubt the OA.

Your split is right...
But "In addition...." should modify "certain yoga"

But still i was wrong..
I went with B

First up, when you read the sentence, notice the use of 's at the end. Why? Because we are comparing 'purgative effect of peristaltic pulses' and 'purgative effect of a laxative' using 'like'. It is correctly used in the original sentence and my first thought is that they must have incorrectly compared 'purgative effect of peristaltic pulses' and 'a laxative' in some options. A quick look shows us that B and C are incorrect.
They end with 'a purgative effect that is like a laxative' and 'a purgative effect like a laxative'.

We are left with A, D and E.

D and E are incorrect because we are looking for the do-er of the actions 'relieving stress and building strength'. We need 'certain yoga poses' after the comma. D and E use 'the onset of peristaltic pulses' after the comma which doesn't make sense.

Look at an easier example:
In addition to cooking for the whole family, .......

What are you looking for after the comma? The person who cooks.

In addition to cooking for the whole family, the servant cleans the house and runs errands.

(A) is correct.

(D) Leakey's contributions to archaelogy include her discovery of the earliest direct evidence of hominid activity and her painstaking documentation of

(E) Leakey's contributions to archaelogy include her discovering the earliest direct evidence of hominid activity and painstaking documentation of

This question is different.

This is an easier version of this question:

In addition to the beautiful gown, her attire included a studded belt and a diamond brooch.

'her work on the miocene homicide fosiil record', 'her discovery of the earliest direct evidence of hominid activity' and 'her painstaking documentation of paintings' are all a part of Mary Leaky's contributions.
So after 'In addition to her work on the miocene homicide fosiil record', you are looking for 'Mary Leaky's contributions include...'

What is the antecedent of the stand-alone demonstrative pronoun – these- in OA – A and the wrong choice E.? Is it -the poses - or - the pulses – or -the pumps – or a combination of two or three of them ? Of course, E has a larger modification issue and so the pronoun antecedence turns a smaller issue. Secondly, can a demonstrative pronoun, that is used more informally to refer to something or somethings that you can finger point at, stand alone per se?

In A, 'these' logically refers to the peristaltic pulses in the small intestine (not that any other choice has a clear antecedent for 'these' or 'they'). So there is no reason to obsess about the pronoun usage. Let's not forget - we need to evaluate the given options, not try to create an optimal sentence of our own.

A cannot be the right answer. I read a post by an expert on some other forum I think that pronouns such as these, those are correct on GMAT, only when these, those are immediately followed by a noun. So, it should have been something such as: these "pulses" have a purgative effect like a laxative’s.

Now, we have a noun "pulses" next to "these" and so, it would be correct.

This is the impression I have. Can someone confirm this; else can you quote an example from OG or GMATPrep where the correct answer just uses these/those without any noun.
