The meaning before the comma is not very clear to me. Ultimately, it does not matter. We should focus on the part after the comma.

Absolutely - it is not required to understand the scientific meaning of the part before comma to answer the question. Nonetheless, if you are interested, following is the explanation. (It is engineering, not GMAT :) ):

When an external force is applied to a material, its shape changes, i.e., it gets deformed. For example, when a steel cylindrical object is pulled longitudinally, its length increases, whereas the diameter reduces. There is a mathematical relation between this applied force (expressed as "stress") and the deformation (expressed as "strain"), which is commonly used in mechanical engineering design.

A. of a material and force applicable on the material, the students decided that the data that was collected for calculation was
"force applicable" suggests as there is a certain amount of force required, distorts the meaning. "data that was collected....was" ,as if collection happened as the same time as decided to be inadequate. incorrect

B. of and applied force on a material, the students had decided that the data that was collected for calculation is
"is" should be "was".inocrrect

C. and applied force of a material, the students decided that the data that was collected for calculation was
"applied force of a material" suggests the material itself has force.another, same error as A.incorrect

D. of a material and applied force on the material, the students decided that the data that had been collected for calculation was
seems fine
E. of a material and its applied force, the students decided that the data collected for calculation is
"its applied force",whose?? material's?? incorrect.."is" should be "was"

IMO D

In an experiment to establish the relation between deformation of a material and force applicable on the material, the students decided that the data that was collected for calculation was inadequate for the purpose.

B. of and applied force on a material, the students had decided that the data that was collected for calculation is
C. and applied force of a material, the students decided that the data that was collected for calculation was

Fresh Verbal Question From GMAT Club Tests'. Written by sayantanc2k

GMAT Club Tests' Official Explanation:

A. The word “applicable” wrongly implies that the force had not yet been applied, but the deformation already took place. Instead of “applicable”, “applied” must be used.

B. The past perfect tense “had decided” and the simple past tense “was collected” wrongly indicate that the action “decide” occurred before the action “collected”.

C. The preposition “of” wrongly indicates that applied force belonged to the material or the applied force was a feature of the material. The force was applied “on” the material.

D. CORRECT. Use of simple past “decided” and past perfect “had been collected” correctly indicate that the action “collected” happened before the action “decide”.

E. The pronoun “its” does not have a proper antecedent. “Material” cannot be the antecedent because “material’s applied force” does not make sense - the applied force did not belong to the material.
