The first clause should modify Noether but A, B, and E fail to do so.
Between C and D. C is wrong because the subject, "many of her 53 years" and the predicate, "struggling with..." do not make sense.

This question was taken from E-gmat Scholararium, they state A as correct answer bcoz, as they explain, there is contrasting idea. The modifier is used to modify Noether.
