In one week a construction worker worked more than 40 hours, and was paid two times his regular hourly rate for every hour worked in excess of 40 hours. If he earned $780, how many hours did he work in that week?

(1) If he had worked 6 more hours that week, his earnings would have been $960.
(2) If he had worked 20 fewer hours that week, his earnings would have been $390 less that week.

The 960-780 is earned through over time pay.

Re: In one week a construction worker worked more than 40 hours, [#permalink]
Statement 1:
Let the hourly rate be y.
Let him work for x extra hours after 40.

Therefore, 40y+(2y)*x=780
and 40y+(2y)*(x+6)=960

Therfore, 12y=180
Thats, y = 15.
Therefore, 15 dollars/hour is the normal rate and 30 dollars/hour is the overtime rate.

Statement 2:
When it says that he "worked 20 fewer hours that week", what does that mean? Does it mean that he worked for 40-20 hours that week? I dont get it. Anyone explain the second statement please?
