In the figure above, ℓ1 is parallel to ℓ2 and ℓ2 is parallel to ℓ3. What is the value of a + b + c + d + e?

A. 180
B. 270
C. 360
D. 450
E. It cannot be determined from the information given

When a line (aka transversal) intersect parallel lines, we get several pairs of angles that add to 180°:


So, from the given diagram, we can see that a + b = 180°, and c + d = 180°
So we get: a + b + c + d + e = (a + b) + (c + d) + e = 180 + 180 + e
Since we have no way of determining the value of e, the correct answer is E

Hi Brent BrentGMATPrepNow, not sure why is d + e = 180 (on a straight line) is not possible here?
