Let the point on BC from A be at D..
Now angle X = angle CAB - angle CAD= 90-angle CAD

In ∆ACD, angle C + angle CAD =90 or angle CAD=90-42

So x = 90-(90-42)=42

Let the vertex of the right angle on BC be D. We see that angle DAC = 180 - 90 - 42 = 48.

Since angle CAB = 90 and angle DAC = 48, angle BAD = x = 90 - 48 = 42.

Answer: C
