In the figure above, what is the value of x?
(1) 2y = 100.
(2) ABCD is a parallelogram.
This question straightforward asks us to find the value of the angle x- in order to solve this question we need to know what kind of polygon this figure is- we cannot assume this shape is a paralleogram.
Statement (1) tells us that the value of y is 100- this may preempt use to assume we can derive the value of x because the two appear to be supplementary; though, we can only derive this conclusion if we know the shape is parallelogram. Insufficent
Statement (2) tells us that figure ABCD is a parallelogram; though, there are infinite possibilities for x and y (e.g y could be 120 and x could be 60, or y could be 100 and x 80)- there is no property of parallelograms that allows us to use algebra or any formula to find x and y. Insufficient
Statement (1) and Statement (2) allow us to make the conclusion that angles X and Y are complementary- knowing that these angles are complementary we can conclude 180-50= 130 or that is 100/2= y and therefore y= 50 and x and y must equal 180.
