In the figure given below, ABCD is a rectangle and GB = DH = 2HC, what is the area (in sq. in.) of the shaded region if AD = 1 in. and AB = 3 in. ?
(A) 1 in^2
(B) 1.5 in^2
(C) 2 in^2
(D) 2.5 in^2
(E) 3 in^2

Various ways to do depending on how you visualise the question.
The simplest would be to take parallelogram GBDH. => GB || DH and GD || BH
Now GB=2HC and DC=3=DH+HC=2HC+HC or HC=1
So the dimensions of parallelogram GBHD are
a) Base = GB=2HC=2*1=2
b) Height = AD=1
So area of GBHD is 2*1=1 inch square.
However, the shaded portion is half of GBHD, so area = 2/2=1 inch square.

Note the shaded area is exactly half of the area of parallelogram DGBH. The area of that is 2 cm * 1 cm = 2 cm^2 so the answer is 1 cm^2.
