Re: In the wake of the scandal, the CEO ordered all company executives and [#permalink]
Subjunctive mood.

Subjunctive trigger word + that + subject + subjunctive verb

Only option E satisfies this condition. OA should be E

(A) the CEO ordered all company executives and even middle managers should provide detailed reports to the outside investigators.

(B) the CEO ordered that all company executives and even middle managers should provide detailed reports to the outside investigators.

(C) the CEO ordered all company executives and even middle managers providing detailed reports to the outside investigators.

(D) the CEO ordered the provision of detailed reports to the outside investigators by all company executives and even middle managers.

(E) the CEO ordered that all company executives and even middle managers provide detailed reports to the outside investigators.

Well, assuming that B and E will be the final choices for most people. E was a tempting choice for me but I went with B because of the word "even" in executives and even middle managers which made "should provide" make more sense than only "provide".

In the absence of "even" I would have selected E. Do you have the OA explanation Bunuel?

Why is B -- "should provide" incorrect?

"should" can mean "advice". "should" in english english can be used in subjuctive pattern, but on american english and gmat english, "should" can not be used in subjuctive mode.

The CEO has "ordered" that his employees provide ( A direct command); using "should" would change the meaning of the sentence by not telling them that they should 100% provide- they could choose to or not to provide, which would be wrong in this case.
