Let the total population be 100.
64% employed. --- 64% of 100 is 64
48% of the employed are MEN, hence we get 14% (64-48) employed women.

Therefore, % employed women out of total employed = (14/64) x 100
=>(1/4) x 100 = 25%

carsen, as you said,
I think this question is a little ambiguous .
It should say 48% of the employed people are men rather
than 48% of the population which include employed and unemployed people.

How do you think?

Hello Chun

I did not understand what you had mentioned.

The question clearly says that 48% of population are employed MEN.
If 100% is the total population, then 48% of this population in 48%, and it is also given that 64% of the total population are employed. Hence we have 14% of the total population as women. The % of women employed / total employed = 14%/64% x100 = 25%

I hope this helps.

Hi, carsen

I mean the question said "64 percent of the population are employed"; that is, 36 percent of the population are unemployed.

so, the total population included employed and unemployed people.

However, "48 percent of the population are employed males",
it should be (employed males) / (total population) rather than
(employed males) / (employed population).

Hence, 64% - 48% directly seems a little confusing.

Am I wrong? thank you

I also found the wording confusing. "48 percent of the population are employed males" implies that if the population is 100 then 48 are employed males.

Wouldn't "48 percent of the EMPLOYED population are males" or "48 percent of those employed are males" make more sense for what they are implying?

All right, let us start again....

In Town X, 64 percent of the population are employed, and 48 percent of the population are employed males. What percent of the employed people in Town X are females?

Let us give some variables to the terminology

Total population = T
Total employed = E
Employed Men = EM
Unemployd men = UM
Employed women = EW
unemployed women = UW

Now T = EM + UM + EW +UW (this is clear)

Let us pick a number, says total population is 100

therefore EM + UM + EW +UW = 100
From the question we know that 64% of the population are employed. that is EM + EW = 64 = E (this is clear too).

And it is also given that 48% of the population are employed male. Therefore EM=48 (this is also clear)

how many are employed females ?.

E = EM + EW - - -> 64=48+EW. ----> EW=16 (this is clear too)

The question asks "What percent of the employed people in Town X are females" . We know total employed 64, we know total men employed 48, and we know total female employed 16.

The question asks for % females from the employed people in the town AND NOT what percent employed women in the total population (16/64 x 100). In the total employed people there are 64 members and in this 64 members there are 16 women.

I hope this is clear.

let the population be 100
so 64 people will be employed
48 percent is male, so 100-48 = 52% is female
52% of 64 is 33.28
So percentage of employed female is 52%

Oops, my bad. Hasn't noticed that 48 percent of population are employed males.

So here's the working agian

let the population be 100
so 64 people will be employed

48 percent of the population are employed males. So 48 men are employed
That leaves 64-48 = 16 women employed.

So percentage is 16/64 * 100% = 25%

in the problem he is saying 48 % of males.
48 % of 64

so calculate for 100 % = 100 * 48/64 = 75% of male are employed
100 - 75 = 25 % are females .

Note : 48 of 64 is 75 %

In Town X, 64 percent of the population are employed, and 48 percent of the population are employed males. What percent of the employed people in Town X are females?

(A) 16%
(B) 25%
(C) 32%
(D) 40%
(E) 52%

We are asked to find the percentage of females in employed people.

Total employed people 64%, out of which 48 are employed males, hence 16% are employed females.

(employed females)/(total employed people)=16/64=1/4=25%
