Are you referring to the part of Elite097's explanation that says " no gerbil-selling store sells exotic birds"? That's actually not quite right; it relies on a logical reversal. We know this: IF (fish + no exotic birds) THEN gerbils, not the other way around. If a store sells gerbils, all we conclude about it is that it isn't independent. It may or may not sell anything else. We do know from the text that SOME stores do sell gerbils and fish, but not exotic birds. But that doesn't mean that there aren't other stores that sell all 3, or just gerbils and birds. So C could be true, but it doesn't have to be, so it's out.

We have several statements about pet stores in West Calverton:

Most pet stores sell exotic birds.
Most pet stores that sell exotic birds also sell tropical fish.
Any pet store that sells tropical fish but not exotic birds does sell gerbils.
No independently owned pet store sells gerbils.
We need to find the answer that must be true based on this information.

Explanation of Answer Choices:
(A) Most pet stores in West Calverton that are not independently owned do not sell exotic birds.

Incorrect. There’s no information about the proportion of exotic bird sales at non-independently owned stores, so we cannot conclude this.
(B) No pet stores in West Calverton that sell tropical fish and exotic birds sell gerbils.

Incorrect. While we know that stores selling tropical fish but not exotic birds sell gerbils, there is no rule preventing stores that sell both tropical fish and exotic birds from selling gerbils. This cannot be concluded.
(C) Some pet stores in West Calverton that sell gerbils also sell exotic birds.

Incorrect. We know that any pet store that sells gerbils must also sell tropical fish but not exotic birds. Therefore, no gerbil-selling store sells exotic birds.
(D) No independently owned pet store in West Calverton sells tropical fish but not exotic birds.

Correct. Any store that sells tropical fish but not exotic birds must sell gerbils, and we know that no independently owned pet stores sell gerbils. Therefore, no independently owned pet store can sell tropical fish without also selling exotic birds.
(E) Any independently owned pet store in West Calverton that does not sell tropical fish sells exotic birds.

Incorrect. There’s no information to support this claim. Some independently owned stores might sell neither tropical fish nor exotic birds.
Hi Elite097
Please clarify my understanding of option C

Option C states " Some pet stores in West Calverton that sell gerbils also sell exotic birds" & it is given that " Any pet store that sells tropical fish but not exotic birds does sell gerbils", from these 2 statements how can we arrive at a conclusion "No pet stores in West Calverton that sell gerbils also sell exotic birds", as there can be (probably) pet stores that sell all three exotic birds, tropical fish & gerbils

Most EB -> TF
TF and not EB --> G
Independently owned store --> no G or G --> no independently owned store

So,
TF and not EB --> G --> no independently owned store

(A) Most pet stores in West Calverton that are not independently owned do not sell exotic birds.
Cannot infer

(B) No pet stores in West Calverton that sell tropical fish and exotic birds sell gerbils.
Cannot infer

(C) Some pet stores in West Calverton that sell gerbils also sell exotic birds.
Cannot infer

(D) No independently owned pet store in West Calverton sells tropical fish but not exotic birds.
Same as TF and not EB --> no independently owned store ( as independently owned store --> not (TF and not EB))

(E) Any independently owned pet store in West Calverton that does not sell tropical fish sells exotic birds.
Cannot infer

In West Calverton, most pet stores sell exotic birds, and most of those that sell exotic birds also sell tropical fish. However, any pet store there that sells tropical fish but not exotic birds does sell gerbils; and no independently owned pet stores in West Calverton sell gerbils.

If the statements above are true, which one of the following must be true?

(A) Most pet stores in West Calverton that are not independently owned do not sell exotic birds.

(B) No pet stores in West Calverton that sell tropical fish and exotic birds sell gerbils.

(C) Some pet stores in West Calverton that sell gerbils also sell exotic birds.

(D) No independently owned pet store in West Calverton sells tropical fish but not exotic birds.

(E) Any independently owned pet store in West Calverton that does not sell tropical fish sells exotic birds.
