I think the right answer is C. Surprisingly, I didn't feel depressed after the operation i had. There was pain, but I took the pills the doctor prescribed and everything was OK.

Individuals who undergo plastic surgery often experience a period of depression immediately after surgery, because pain is high and aesthetic benefits are temporarily low as the body's tissues recover from the trauma of an operation.

A high and aesthetic benefits are temporarily low as the body's tissues recover

B high and their aesthetic benefits are temporarily low as they recover

C high with temporarily low aesthetic benefits in recovery

D high, while aesthetic benefits are temporarily low to recover

E high, while their aesthetic benefits are temporarily low in recovery

This question is based on Pronouns and Construction.

Option B contains two ambiguous pronouns – their and they. It is not clear whose benefits are under discussion in this sentence. The pronoun ‘they’ cannot be said to clearly refer to the noun ‘individuals’ as it is placed far away from this noun and another plural noun ‘benefits’ appears before the former. So, Option B can be eliminated.

The phrase “in recovery” makes Option C ambiguous. It is not clear what exactly is in recovery. Logically it should be ‘individuals’ but the phrase is placed too far away from the noun to appropriately modify it. As it stands, the phrase seems to modify “aesthetic benefits”. So, Option C can be eliminated.

Option D also conveys the meaning that it is the benefits that are temporarily low to recover. So, Option D can be eliminated.

Option E also contains the ambiguously placed phrase ‘in recovery’. Since the phrase is placed after the noun ‘aesthetic benefits’ in this option also, Option E can be eliminated.

Option A is clear. This is the only option that clarifies that its is the ‘body’s tissues’ that must recover.
This option also maintains parallelism between the two reasons given – pain is high and aesthetic benefits are temporarily low. Therefore, C is the most appropriate option.
