Applied to R4 INSEAD for January intake 21. Won't go too much into details but I got a out-of-the box profile, industry switcher, mid 30s, mostly entrepreneur since graduation with some very highs and some lows, very extensive international exposure even for INSEAD (ran projects in Africa, Asoa, Europe in industries as diverse as contemporary art, oil and gas, construction...) and very solid recommendations. Problem was my GMAT.
Had a big hiatus in my training, tested positive to COVID 19, broke my right hand and have been capped at 640 as I took the test with a plaster a week before deadline.
This morning I received an email from adcom that was a bit puzzling. In a nutshell they claimed my GMAT profile was not matching the quality of my profile that is promising and that this was not a rejection but that I was encouraged to re-take the test to match a more decent score in order not to lag during the very quant demanding program and that I should send it within months to the adcom. Upon asking my admission officer she even claimed I might still take a shot for the January intake, I feel next intake would be too late for me.
I thought re application were a no no for INSEAD?
Has someone experienced this kind of situation? is it a kind of waitlist? Due to deferrals ?
Thanks

Hi, this is common, if they see that the GMAT is low they will reject saying that would be good if you retake the GMAT and come back if you have an acceptable grade. Anyway, they get also ppl in with a 640 and, despite not being aligned with your profile is not a score that should ban you from being accepted.
My guess is that they like you but not enough to lower their statistics, so if you grow your GMAT you will have a chance, maybe you could commit to raising it before January if they give you a conditional admit (my suggestion if you really want to start now).
I got a similar response when I applied in R2. I think I've got a strong profile, but due to COVID related complications I took the GMAT last minute and got a pretty mediocre score, which was submitted after I'd already completed interviews etc.
I got a message from my AO suggesting I retake the GMAT before "mid september/october", which is quite vague and a little confusing. So now a little stuck trying to figure out if I can meaningfully improve my score before then...
