how about to work on multiple boards not just sit? if those are the companies where one has a stake the work becomes meaningful. if one is hired as an independent director and has several such external affiliations than it would get too boring. the real job is done by CxOs, not by the boards, imho

I think he meant sit on board meeting, and experience where the high-impact decision got made, like accepting buyout offers, fire CEO, spin-offs, etc. Decisions that would effect thousand of people lives

my point is that when you're owner you have much more motivation to actually work, as opposed to working elsewhere and just sit and vote as an independent director.

I agree with you. When you have a personal stake in the company, when you livelihood is depend on it, there are no playing around. I think the point of an independent directors are to provide an un-bias opinion about a subject matters or avoid conflict of interest. For example, if you are the chairman of the board and the CEO, you cant also sit on the compensation committee also. That's conflict of interest. You need independent director to sit on the compensation committee and decide how much the Chairman and CEO got paid. But sometime I wonder, who decide how much independent direct got paid lol ???

HBS hopefuls, the moment you’ve been waiting for has arrived.

Today, the Admissions Director’s Blog announced the one and only essay question of the 2014 Harvard Business School application:

“You’re applying to Harvard Business School. We can see your resume, school transcripts, extra-curricular activities, awards, post-MBA career goals, test scores and what your recommenders have to say about you. What else would you like us to know as we consider your candidacy?”

That’s it. No word limit. Use your own judgment as to how much to tell us. We have neither a “right answer” nor a “correct length” in mind. We will review all the elements of the written application to decide who moves forward to the interview stage of our process.

This question presents a unique challenge and opportunity. We will be posting some great tips in the coming days – so check back soon.

An Accepted.com MBA admissions consultant will be happy to help you present yourself at your best in your HBS application. Check out our MBA Application Packages or contact us for one-on-one guidance through the application process.

Deadlines:

Round 1: September 16, 2013

Round 2: January 6, 2014

Round 3: April 7, 2014

I think I might throw my hat in the ring, and get rejected. So later in life, when I am famous, I can say Havard rejected me. It is their lost lol

same for me. only applied to insead (and did not shine on my 1st interview). my second choice would LBS, Oxford, may be IE, but it does not impress me much. among 1-year programs insead is far ahead of others

Well, the worst case scenario. We both see each other again at the LBS invite all application thread. The best case, we will meet in Fonty. lol

i assume there won't be any "lucky" waitlisters since it is only R1...

Hello fellow applicants,

Everyone is discussing about interviews, anyone still working on app for round 2? I am in a pretty bad stage , still to go with 5 more essays in next 10 days !! Just wanted to check if anyone faced any technical issues while submitting app ? I would be submitting on last day 12th June for sure considering my progress , just scared if something wrong happens that day.

Any things to keep in mind before submission ? Thanks!

When you upload the document. Make sure you combine document into single pdf page. If you have multiple pdf, they only take the last one your upload.

they ask you to sign the pdf with electronic signature, which needs to be created. nothing complicated. but definitely do not submit in the last hour

Had my first interview today. Youngish alum...mid 30s/Indian/non-related industry. Passed out 7-8 years back.

Well, my interview was the exact opposite of what I have read in this forum...far from a friendly chat! The interviewer had preconceived notions about me. He had asked for my essays and CV a week before and had made up my mind even before the interview started. He grilled me a lot on why MBA/why INSEAD and looked unconvinced and uninterested throughout. I stood my ground till the end, although I am not sure if that makes any difference.

He even said that I had never taken risks in my life and the funny part is that I manage a portfolio and take risks with other peoples money on a daily basis. And prior to my current role, I had given up a equity research job with one of the biggest bulge bracket banks on Wall Street to be part of a start up PE fund based in India and the fund didn't survive the financial crisis. I am not sure how much more risks he wanted me to take...take up base jumping for a living? :)

He was obnoxious and rude - he repeatedly took calls during the interview and made sure that I know what an important big man he was. Even for setting up the interview, I emailed him a couple of times and he didn't even bother acknowledging let alone responding to my email. Finally I called him and he gave me exactly 10 seconds of his time and finally agreed to meet me!

I am hoping that my second interviewer is better.

Anyway, I think after today's experience...I'll start focusing on my apps for other schools. This chapter looks pretty much over for me.

Hey, if insead is ur primary choice, don't give up. There is much to fight for. Rude mode is to test u. My 1st interview wasn't spectacular, friendly but a lot of doubts and probing. Still, before starting other apps, I'm going to do my best on the 2nd interview

Sorry to hear. You shouldn't let one bad experience deter you from INSEAD. I am sure INSEAD has their share people who won't get along also. The interview recommendation is just part of your application, it is not the whole package, just focus on doing better in your second interview.
