Re: Interviewing your replacement [#permalink]
I went through this process and I'm currently training my replacements. It's definitely interesting. I asked some of the same Qs that I got asked in B-School interviews as they're very open-ended and give you insight into how the other person thinks.

Re: Interviewing your replacement [#permalink]
I'm doing this right now too. It's a little bittersweet. Here I am going back to get my MBA and I'm interviewing people who are completing their MBA this year (Kellogg, Carnegie Mellon, Chicago, etc) for my job at twice the paygrade and none of the experience...lol.

I actually just ask them "Walk me through your resume", ask them what they know about my role, why they want to work for my company, then I just let them fire away questions at me for half the interview to see how prepared they are. I know there are others who are "casing" them and ask really detailed/technical questions, I'm looking more for fit.

I suppose I'm going to be doing that, too, since we're most likely hiring internally. Feels a little weird to be interviewing your coworkers, though, with whom you have worked or are working.

I actually wrote a case interview for the last series of interviews I did. They can thank my dreams of consulting for that one.

be sure to throw in "what matters the most to you and why?"

i'll be doing interviews and training for my replacement starting next month, i'm on the opposite side of the spectrum where i want to tell them the honest ups and downs of the company and role so that they can have a clear idea of what they're getting into.

They are not replacing me! One less headcount to layoff and pay unemployment benefits  :)

At some point in the interview, make sure to say "Well, I could agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong."

I wanted to ask those questions, but apparently my boss wants to ask them. I guess that's why I'm going to b-school - so that I get to ask those questions.
