Well, I took the GMAT test for the first time today, and I'm pleased to say that I didn't suck completely. I scored 99 percentile.
My GMAT experience is quite different from the experiences of many other posters, I'm sure. I moved to Peru in 2004 and became an English teacher. After a decade of living here, I was convinced to apply to work at a GMAT Prep company. As part of the interview process, I had to take paper test #14, on which I scored perfect reading, 1 bad critical reasoning, and 5 bad sentence correction for a score somewhere in the 40s. I got hired.
After a few months of teaching verbal, I became interested in the math section of the test, so I did some of the paper tests to see how I'd do. Well, I sucked. I don't remember my exact score, but it was nothing to write home about. The worst thing was that when I looked at my test, I had made a lot of stupid mistakes such as providing the answer to Y when I was asked to solve for X.
I read the Princeton Review 2013 GMAT book, which put me on a good path. I learned to plug in numbers and backsolve. I learned the basics of AD/BCE on data sufficiency. After the book, I started scoring 42 on the math. It's a solid book, but it's not going to get you much above low 40s. Without other sources, I turned to OG13. After working through all the quant problems, I was up to 45. Then I started working through the data sufficiency section. This was the most frustrating part of my journey. No matter how many questions I did, my score didn't budge off of Q:45.
After awhile, I realized that most of my problems were in geometry so I started watching some video lessons by AndrewsTutoring on YouTube. They're GRE lessons, but I found a lot of good, solid lessons in there that I could take to the bank. It seems that GRE Math is not as difficult as GMAT Math, so it was a nice foundation to build on.
Then I switched jobs to a new GMAT Prep place. It has resources from OG9 all the way through the 2017 edition. I got a lot more exposure to math and verbal. Soon my simulations got up to 790. I started doing 75 minutes of math questions every other day. I really thought I had a shot at scoring 800.
Sadly, my real score did not match that of my best simulation. I must confess some disappointment, but it's a solid score. I'll do better next time.
Is Veritas Prep hiring?
Congratulations! This a very good score. I am very happy for you!
