Hi Orochimaru,

Welcome to the world of GMAT and the GMATClub forum. While I am not an expert in all things GMAT, I do not believe that beginning your studies in the MGMAT series would be the best for you at this time. Furthermore, while it is true the MGMAT book series is unlikely to experience an update in the next couple of years, by not purchasing them now, you avoid the potentiality that they are updated (though it's usually only very minor edits). You might also be able to purchase the books used at a greatly discounted price in the future. That is definitely something to consider.

For you, I would recommend that you begin your refresher/preliminary study by going through the excellent free resources provided by GMATClub. The Ultimate Grammar Book produced by GMATClub can be found at https://gmatclub.com/forum/ultimate-gmat-grammar-book-133952.html. It is a phenomenal resource for native and non-native english alike. This would be an excellent place to begin, and, since you have quite a bit of time until you sit for the test, you should be able to master some of the trickier elements of English grammar; You will enjoy that when you're blazing through Sentence Correction problems.

BB, the founder of this forum, suggests people read fiction books in preparation for the verbal portion. A reading list can be found at https://gmatclub.com/forum/books-to-read-improve-verbal-score-and-enjoy-a-good-read-76079.html. I would highly recommend you do. Not only will you enjoy reading classics, but also you will gain a deeper grasp of good english grammar.

Lastly, if you want to refresh your math, I highly recommend starting with khanacademy.org. Go through their pre-algebra, algebra and geometry lessons at a leisurely pace. The lessons are quite enjoyable.

I would suggest your begin your proper GMAT studying about 6 months from your intended test date, but that is just a general rule of thumb.

I hope that helps answer your question and gives you some direction for the next few years of study.

I can say that it's pretty likely that there will be new editions of the books before you actually take the test. The changes won't be revolutionary because the GMAT doesn't change much over time, but there will be updates that will enhance the books.

You are pretty far out from the test. I would agree that for now your best bet it to focus on the fundamentals of the GMAT before tackling the strategy. Make sure you are solid in English grammar, that your reading comprehension is strong, and that your basic math skills are sharp. The free resources are probably sufficient to help you build your basic skills and then you can focus on GMAT strategies when you get closer to the test - maybe 12-18 months out.
