Is k positive?
(1) k is between -2 and 3 on the number line.
(2) k is between 1 and 2 on the number line.
(1) k is between -2 and 3 on the number line.
(2) k is between 1 and 2 on the number line.
Target question: Is k positive?
Statement 1: k is between -2 and 3 on the number line.
Let's TEST some values.
There are several values of k that satisfy statement 1. Here are two:
Case a: k = 1. In this case, the answer to the target question is YES, k IS positive
Case b: k = -1. In this case, the answer to the target question is NO, k is NOT positive
Since we cannot answer the target question with certainty, statement 1 is NOT SUFFICIENT
Statement 2: k is between 1 and 2 on the number line.
In other words, k = 1.something
If k = 1.something, then the answer to the target question is YES, k IS positive
Since we can answer the target question with certainty, statement 2 is SUFFICIENT
Answer: B
