Is the median of a set of 8 numbers > 20?
(i) 5 of the numbers have a value of at least 20
(ii) sum of the 8 numbers is 160
IMO OA :
Is the median of a set of 8 numbers > 20?
(1) 5 of the numbers have a value of
at least 20 --> if these 5 numbers equal to 21 then no matter what the other 3 numbers are the median will be 21, so more than 20 but it's also possible these 5 numbers to be equal to 20 and in this case median will be 20, so not more than 20. Not sufficient.
(2) Sum of the 8 numbers is 160 --> if all numbers equal to 20 then the answer will be NO but if the set is for example {0, 0, 0, 32, 32, 32, 32, 32} then the answer will be YES, as median in this case will be equal to 32.
(1)+(2) Again it's possible to have the answer YES (for example {0, 0, 0, 32, 32, 32, 32, 32}) as well as the answer NO (for example {0, 0, 0, 20, 20, 40, 40, 40}). Not sufficient.
