Is the perimeter of triangle ABC greater than 6 cm?

(1) One side of triangle ABC measures 3 cm

(2) The lengths of the three sides of triangle ABC( in cm) are consecutive integers

Hey delta23

Welcome to GMATClub!

1. One side of triangle ABC measures 3 cm

Even if this side of the triangle ABC was the longest side, the sum of the other
two sides need to be greater than 3cm - A triangle is formed when the sum of
the shorter sides is greater than the longest sides
.

The perimeter(which is the sum of the 3 sides) will be greater than 6 in any case (Sufficient)

2. The lengths of the three sides of triangle ABC( in cm) are consecutive integers

The minimum sides of the triangle possible are 1, 2, 3 (since we need consecutive integers).
However, these lines will not form a triangle(as 1+2 is not greater than 3). Therefore, the
minimum sides of the triangle possible are 2, 3, and 4 and the perimeter > 6 (Sufficient - Option D)

Hope this helps you!

Hey chamarts

The answer to your question is NO - we cannot form a triangle with sides 1,2, and 3.

Check this article for the details of the property in BLUE in my explanation for this problem

Also, read from the following list to solidify your concepts as far as geometry is concerned.

Hey pushpitkc,

Thanks, mate.

Appreciate your quick response.

Since this is an open-ended question, can this triangle be a scalene?
