To be honest, I don't understand the following solution, but this is what is given in the book:
Statement (1): Suppose x = 3.
Then 3 =(−3y − 3)/ (1− y),
or 3(1 – y) = –3y – 3,
or 3 – 3 y = –3 y – 3,
or 3 = –3. But this is impossible.
Hence, Statement (1) alone is sufficient and says that “No, x is not 3.”
Statement (2):
(|x|/x) + |x| x > 0 .
Suppose x = 3.
Then 3/3+ 3x3 > 0 ,
or 1 + 9 = 10 > 0.
This doesn’t prevent x being equal to 3, nor does it support it.
So, Statement (2) alone is not sufficient.
The answer is (A).
