ISB Profile Evaluation

Question

Can you please evaluate my current profile for ISB?

Academics:
10th - 10 CGPA
12th - 93.2%
Undergrad - 8.4 CGPA (BITS Pilani)

Work Ex. (4 years)
Currently working as a project management professional in top US based Oil & Gas company. In a course on 4 years, I have been assigned 3 different roles. Following are brief role descriptions:

Role 1: Developing power bi dashboards to showcase key metrics to track project progress to the management.

Role 2: Collating data and developing presentations for management for annual company plan. This involved, working closely with advisors of presidents to build a story on how the company is progressing and what the company is going to do in the next 7 years.

Role 3: Developing cost of capital projects and presenting the cost estimates to management. This involved, quantifying cost of new oil & gas projects ,usually Blue H2 and CCUS projects. I have estimated around $9B worth projects so far. I have been promoted to “Lead” and manage 2-3 individuals.

Extra Curricular - I mostly devoted my time in studying and didn’t explore much on this side. I was minister of a club during my school and was part of a club in college.

Internships - Interned at Lowe’s India as a Data Analyst during college.

GMAT FE - Currently preparing for it. Target 720+

YRS997 You have a promising profile. But honestly given how competitive ISB has become you cannot afford to slack on any aspect including your GMAT. Aim for a high percentile score. Otherwise, I think you have what it takes, a top tier undergrad, decent academics, proof of career progression and unique industry focus (this is a boon). Be strategic yet engaging in your essays. Bring out your personality. Expert tip- Incorporate elements that demonstrate to the adcom that you will be a dynamic contributor to case study discussions in class. For instance help them envision a professor in financial decision-making relying on your engagement with real insights to evaluate financial decisionmaking for mega projects, adding a layer of interest to theoretical discussions. Drop these nuggets in the interviews as well, so the interviewers can latch onto them and follow your lead in their questions. Strengths :
 
 M.Tech and significant GATE achievement. 
 Relatively strong leadership experience in professional and extracurricular settings. 
 Strong communication skills evidenced by your Quora presence.  
 Weaknesses :
 
 Technical work experience. This is not exactly a weakness, provided you can align your narrative for the application.  
 Opportunities :
 
 Achievements and impact in your professional and leadership roles. 
 Government role differentiates you from other applicants.  
 Threats :
 
 High work experience as compared to the ISB average. It is not impossible but it will be competitive to get in. 
 GMAT score is just right. You could consider writing the GMAT again.

@YRS997 - Your undergrad (BITS) pedigree and GPA/ acads are strong. The work-experience sounds interesting, given the O&G and analytical angles, and promotion. Targeting the GFE equivalent of 730+ (with a balanced sectional split) would be ideal. The Extracurricular Activities need clarity and strengthening - were there any activities (e.g. CSR) you were involved in at work? Or do you have other hobbies e.g. sports, music, arts, etc.? Anything outside the traditional professional arena counts. Remember that recency and consistency are key here. @Rohit1003 - your work-ex/ domains present interesting angles, while the GMAT score could use some improvement. ISB's GMAT Classic average is ~720; aiming for 10-20 points higher (in GFE equivalent) would be ideal.

Some questions to ponder on:

1. Why/ how will an MBA help now and what are your career goals post-MBA?

2. What are the transferable skills (technical/ business) from your professional stints that differentiate you from the competitive pool?

3. What are the highs/ lows in your professional and personal life that can help present a balanced profile.

Hi Rohit1003 hope this finds you wellI have worked with many older applicants and helped them get into their target schools. You should recognize that ISB is typically targeted toward candidates who have less than 7-8 years of experience. That is not to say older candidates do not stand a chance. I have guided applicants who got the ISB admit at over 35 years of age. However, the general feedback I have from some of the older students at ISB is that on-campus recruitment opportunities are limited for older students compared to those with fewer years of experience. My recommendation to you would be to thoroughly evaluate which business schools are the right fit for you (IIM A, B, C and L). Having said the above, you must try to increase your GMAT score to demonstrate strong academic capabilities. Focus on demonstrating an upward growth trajectory, leadership experiences in a professional setup where you have driven projects, motivated team members, closely worked with industry stalwarts, and created a strong brand positioning for yourself in your area of work. I see you have worked as a scientist for a long time. It is expected that much of your work has been research-focused. While research profiles are differentiated for an MBA program, you should be strategic in communicating the challenges you faced during your research work. You should also demonstrate functional responsibilities in relevant projects, showing your ability to manage and engage stakeholders. While speaking about your research work, highlight your hands-on experience, your ability to engage with industry leaders to gather insights, and your skill in contextualizing business problems in the specific area of work you will target post-MBA. Surprising that you didn't consider it worthy enough to even mention your discipline in your undergrad  YRS997 .

Also, 720+ in GMAT FE is almost the 100th percentile! Wondering if you are referring to the classical edition (which actually, is longer being offered).

You have a very strong academic background and solid career progression; considering the same, you will have a strong chance at making it to ISB provided you are able to put forth a set of set of goals that sync well with your existing experience as well as achieve the GMAT score you are targetting. ISB was highly competitive in the last intake; hence, it will be essential for you to not only have a score that exceeds the average score of the applicant pool but also a set of essays that are compelling.

Thanks for posting. Here is what we have come up with:

Estimating $9B in capital projects for Blue H2 and CCUS at a top US oil and gas company is an unusual asset for a 4-year profile, and the risk is that it disappears into a line about cost estimation rather than landing as the strategic decision-support role it actually is.

- The promotion to Lead, combined with the shift across three distinct functions (analytics, corporate planning, capital estimation) in four years, suggests a company that moves people it trusts. ISB readers will look for whether that progression came with increasing scope, so the essays need to show what changed in the decisions you owned, not just the roles you held.

- At BITS Pilani with an 8.4 CGPA and a clean 10th and 12th record, academics create no drag on this file. That frees the application to be decided almost entirely on how well the work experience reads, which raises the stakes for the essays considerably.

- The extracurricular section is thin, and with a school-minister role in 12th and one college club, there isn't much to stretch. What matters more here is whether the work itself shows leadership without authority: did you influence senior stakeholders, shape decisions above your title, or drive something that wasn't in your job description? The advisors-to-presidents engagement in Role 2 may be the most useful thread to develop.

- A target of 720+ on the current GMAT Focus Edition sits at approximately the 98th percentile and would map to roughly 750 Classic, which is well clear of ISB's typical range. Anything around 655 to 665 (around the 90th to 92nd percentile) would already be competitive given the rest of the profile; aiming higher is sensible, but a score in that band doesn't need to hold up the application.

The clearest path to a strong ISB file runs through making the capital estimation work feel like strategic input to major investment decisions, which it genuinely was, rather than a technical delivery function.
