Chartered Accountancy - Qualified Today (11-Jul-2024)

Hearty congratulations Manoj_0328! You should be celebrating today, than writing this long mail on GMATClub!
Quote:
12th – 85% (CBSE-2016; 95 in all 3 commerce subjects, 88 in English and 54 in Maths)
Your Maths marks unfortunately seem to suggest that you might need to put in significant effort in GMAT, since almost half of the GMAT exam is Maths. Also, when you say "720 on GMAT", I think you might be referring to the old/classical GMAT.

See if you can get a 655+ on the GMAT Focus Edition. That's considered a decent score on the Focus Edition.

All the best!

Hello
I am a Chartered Accountant looking to pursue my MBA from ISB next year.

Please find my profile below:

Academics:
10th – 96% (SSLC-2014)
12th – 85% (CBSE-2016; 95 in all 3 commerce subjects, 88 in English and 54 in Maths)
Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting and Finance) from IGNOU – Certification pending
Chartered Accountancy - Qualified Today (11-Jul-2024)

Work Experience – 1 year and 10 months (as of Jul-2024)
Articleship for 3 years from Feb-2018 at a boutique firm (A start-up by Ex Big 4 associates) and then associated with them as a part of the leadership team for 1 year and 10 months, and had a partnership offer to stay there.

  • Led a team of 10 Audit executives and handled assignments involving Statutory audits, Due diligence, GST Refunds and Management consulting in industries such as Real estate, Shrimp Farming and Exports, Pharmaceuticals, Information technology, Food and Hospitality, FMCG, Apparel, Startups, and NGO.
  • Re-engineered the audit division in a very short time
  • Successfully obtained GST refund totaling nearly 20 crores for many clients
  • Managed client relationships ranging from startups to corporations with annual turnovers exceeding 1500 crores
  • Processes set-up: Audit approach and structure for GST and Statutory Audits, GST Refund assignments, and Recruitment process.
  • Personally Trained and up-skilled more than 30 team members
  • Coded and Built Templates and automations tools out of self-initiative for GST Refund, Project Matrix, 2A Reconciliation, HSN code finder, GST NTL, Employee Cost, ESI, EPF, TDS, etc. some of which resulted in 100x increase in productivity and time saving
  • Interviewed and recruited top talent, adding significant value to the organization
  • Been part of Key strategic decisions in the leadership team and added exceptional value and insights.
  • Ideated a Fin-tech tool for audit and accounting industry.
GMAT - Yet to take the test but would strategize to score 720+

Extracurricular

  • Divisional Level Football Player
  • Any physical or sport activity
  • Gaming
  • Research
Leadership and Social Impact

  • Volunteering at Fly High India, 2019-22
  • Volunteering at Robin Hood Army, 2019-22
  • Volunteering at Auroville, 2023-24
Career Trajectory: Realized my interest and impact of Tech in Finance during my career and tried to build a Fin-tech product and dropped out of CA for a bit, but was un-successful in building the product. Then relieved my association with the firm by Dec-22 and wanted to get into Fintech but felt I had no strong academic achievement, nor a work-ex from big name company to make me standout and nor I’m from a technical background.

So took a gap year and finished my CA and Bcom(AF) and now would be joining a company in FP&A or  Mergers and Acquisitions or Finance associate in a Fintech company to bridge my role towards Fintech Product Management (i.e. not taking on core audit or tax roles)

Matters I need clarity:

  • Would the ISB MBA programme help a Non-tech person to transition to Fintech Product Management?
  • Would ISB consider my pre graduation work experience to satisfy the 2 years eligibility criteria? Resulting in me eligible to apply for 2025 intake.
  • Does my profile has a good chance for selection assuming a score 720+ in GMAT?

Hi! Your 10th and 12th acads are decent. The adcom will be interested in understanding when exactly you realized about your interest towards Fintech and then why you moved back to completing your CA and graduation. This is where you must talk about the unsuccessful attempt at building the Fintech product. Your work experience is pretty good and you can certainly carve good stories out of it.

Clarification:

1) ISB can help with your desired career transition provided you are able to chalk out synergies between your past experience and product management. A lot of people from non-tech background have transitioned to product management.
2) It will consider it a full-time work experience provided you have documents to justify it i.e. offer letter, relieving letter etc.
3) You have a decent profile but you will be in a very competitive pool of applicants with 2~4 years of experience. You will need some solid stories to make the cut.

We have 40+ mentors from ISB on our platform IvyCrackers and few of them are on ISB admissions interview panel. You can book a complimentary 30-mins call with us and one of the interview panelists will evaluate your profile in detail. In this call, we will delve deep into your profile, help you build an overall strategy for your ISB application, and answer any questions you have about ISB.

Hello Manoj_0328,

Thanks for writing in.

There is a lot you will gain at ISB and it will definitely help you transition to a role you are looking at.

Having said that, and basis our interaction with members of the Ad Com, ISB does not recognize CA articleship as work experience; hence, you will need to possibly delay your plans a bit.

You definitely have a good chance at getting an interview call provided you put forth a strong narrative (in terms of linking your experience to your proposed goals and aptly showcasing the need for the ISB PGP) and achieving the GMAT score you are targetting.

Hope this helps.

All the best!

Dear @Manoj_0328,

On first glance, your profile presents as a well-rounded candidate with strong academic performance (despite a slight dip in 12th-grade marks), notable extracurricular achievements, and impactful work experience early in your career. The real highlight of your profile is your significant early career impact. These elements contribute to a compelling case for the ISB admissions committee.

Addressing Your Questions

1. Transition to Fintech Product Management: Your experience in setting up processes for audit approaches and building automation tools, combined with relevant electives at ISB, will position you well for roles in Fintech Product Management. We believe this transition is realistic and achievable.

2. Pre-Graduation Work Experience: Regarding your query on whether ISB will consider your pre-graduation work experience towards the 2-year eligibility criteria: typically, articleship experience is not counted as full-time work experience, which might affect your eligibility for the 2025 intake. We recommend seeking clarification directly from the admissions committee, possibly during an info session at a location near you.

3. GMAT Score Impact: Assuming you achieve a GMAT score of 720+, it will significantly strengthen your profile and help compensate for the slight dip in your 12th-grade results. This score will enhance your overall candidacy.

We are genuinely eager to learn more about your profile and assist you comprehensively throughout your application journey—from refining your essays to providing guidance on letters of recommendation and preparing for admission interviews.

At Team FLY, we are a collective of ISB alumni dedicated to supporting prospective ISB candidates with profile positioning, essay critiques, and interview preparations.

Please feel free to book a 15-minute free session for a detailed discussion with us: https://calendly.com/reachusfly/15min

With warm regards,
Team Fly

Hi Manoj_0328
I hope you are doing well. To answer your questions-

1. ISB's program definitely caters to career transitions.
2. ISB typically looks for atleast 24 months of work experience. While your pre-qualification experience is valuable, they might weigh it differently. Your work experience will be counted after your graduation. That means after you have completed your ‘Bachelors of Commerce’.
3. A 720+ GMAT would definitely strengthen your application. Combined with your unique mix of CA background, leadership experience, and tech initiative, you have a compelling story to tell.
