Hi,
It would be really helpful if someone could review my profile for ISB (2021).

I am a computer science engineer from NIT Hamirpur (Class 2013). I had graduated with 7 CPGA.

Schooling: CBSE Board
10th: 69.8%
12th: 85.6%

Post my graduation I have worked with Sapient Nitro (approx. 2 years) as a Marketing Analyst and then with a couple of small scale startups serving roles in Digital Marketing & Analytics. I have served at a leadership position too in of those startups. I have in total 6+ years of experience and currently working as a Digital Marketing Head.
I will give my GMAT in the month of July however as per my last 5 mocks I am getting around 680-690.

I have also worked with an NGO based out of Jaipur for one year.

Regards
Akash

Hi Akash,

Your acads and extra-curricular are average. However, I'm sure you have a few rich and impactful stories while working for the small-scale startups (hopefully scaling them up) which can be demonstrated in your application. With this profile, do aim to get a 700+ at the GMAT.
Are there any other hobbies/extra-curricular items which can be covered in the application? Also, what was your role at the NGO and are you still working with it?

Cheers,
Manan

Hi Akashkonline, your GMAT score is a big black box right now. Also, I don't get a sense of your goals and motivation for MBA.

Hi Akashkonline

Good academics and decent profile. With 6+ years of experience, you may scrape through with a slightly lower GMAT, but do try to see if you can push to at least a 700+.

Secondly, digital marketing for startup seems like a good profile, but what also matters is - what are your achievements and what are the skills you have gained during your experience? Also, you haven't mentioned why you'd like to do an MBA. If you're already a Digital Marketing Head, what are you looking for post MBA? The answer to both these should be highlighted in your essays and would help you crack the admission.

You should also look at the IIM A/B/C executive programs. You will be a good fit there.

Hi Milind, both Tata Steel & BIT Mesra are great brands to be associated with and it seems like you've made a positive difference to your work surroundings in the brief 2 years of your professional life. All for good.

I don't get a sense of your motivation for MBA and future goals, but this can be brainstormed later.

The immediate focus should be on getting a GMAT score as close to 700 (and hopefully more).

Hello Milind,
Though your experience is on the lesser side for ISB, you seem to have made quite an impact within your professional work space, which is a good thing. However, you do not have much to share in terms of your extra-curricular after college. AdCom love to see the social impact you have created beyond your personal development. Most times, applicants do not realize the extent of their extra-curricular initiatives, thinking most of it as mundane.
Your mock GMAT score is below average for ISB. Though there is no good or bad score for any school (it depends on your story and other parts of your application too), considering you are also on the lesser side of the average experience, you can aim for a higher score. Again, if you feel by pushing your exam ahead, you can bump up your score by 30-40 points, do do that.

Hello Milind,

Good profile and I concur with the evaluation above. There are a number of examples such as your stint as the President of the Society at college or Firebolt Racing which you should use in your first essay. In addition, you should highlight these experiences to contribute to the Automobile, Aerospace & Mobility special interest group at ISB.
Considering your scores, I feel you should be ready to take it by July. Remember, you want to take the exam when you're at your peak, i.e. if the range is consistently between 690-710 in your case. Also, that should enable you to have some room for a re-test in case (hope not!) it goes south! Also, you'd want at least 45 days to prepare an impactful application.

There's a dedicated profile evaluation thread (link below) where you can get a good perspective on other profiles and evaluation by the admission experts.

Feel free to reach out for further queries.

All the best!

Hi ritwikk2, your goals need a bit of brainstorming, because prima facie, your goal of CxO position in a Consulting company seems to be slightly out of alignment with your career experiences so far.

Quote:
However, my mocks score were in the range of 600-620.
Unfortunately, this is slightly on the lower side. If this is what you end up getting, would earnestly suggest a re-attempt, with a goal of bumping up this score by at least 60-80 points.

Can you please suggest what needs to be done for the profile improvment as mentioned by you in the 1st point.

Also, any other way I can cover up for my low GMAT Score.

Thanks.

Hello!
While acads isn't an area of strength, your experience and achievements across sales across a start-up and a firm as large as Asian Paints puts you in good stead. For your goals, you should target growth in the similar function while industry can change. Aim for a 690+ GMAT to complement your profile.
You'd need to work really hard on the application since the profile overall doesn't prima facie stand out.

All the best!

Hi ritwikk2, I didn't mean to suggest that you profile needed any improvement; I wanted to convey that your goals do not seem to align with your profile.

Unfortunately, there is only so much that a profile can compensate for low GMAT score. You really should be aiming for a 680+.

Hi amen266868, aren't your goals completely divergent from your experience so far (that is largely in HR and labor relations).

I don't see much intervention of either education or technology, in your career so far; so ed-tech as a goal is slightly surprising.

Hi ritwikk2

You belong to the competitive IT sector of candidates and therefore, you need a stellar application to make it stand out. A higher GMAT would also help here as well as great essays.
A GMAT of 600-620 would be too low and you must attempt it again if scores are lesser than 680. As far as goals are considered, given your experience, you should be looking at IT Consulting or possibly Program management roles within IT/ITES industries. A CXO role is too long-term and you need better clarity on post PGP goals as well as short term goals.

PS: You should also look at the IIM A/B/C Executive programs as your profile will be suited well for them as well.

Feel free to reach out for help.

Hi narsiadidela

Sales profiles are extremely coveted at ISB by recruiters. Given your experience, you have a good shot at making it through.

As next steps, get GMAT out of the way. A 700+ should be good. Highlight your learnings from Asian Paints and the startup in your essays. Get your goals right: Where do you see yourself post PGP as well as 5-10 years from now. Well written essays and clarity of goals can see you through.
