It has long been believed that there is an advantage to playing on the home field. The graph is a scatter plot with 14 points. Each point represents a football game and compares the home team's running yard total to the defensive team's. Select the best answer to fill in the blanks in each of the statements based on the data shown in the graph.
Considering the games where the home team ran at least 350 yards, the opposing team ran at least 350 yards in closest to % of those games.
The relationship between the running yard totals of the home team and the opposing team is best described as .
1. Each point on the graph has two projections: one on the y-axis - which is the distance the home team ran; and one on the x-axis - which is the distance the opposing team ran.
2. Then, our first question can rephrased into finding out of how many points that have a y projection >350, also have an x projection >350. This is \(\frac{1}{7} \approx 0.143 = 14.3\%\), which is closest to 14%.
3. For the second question, if we increase the distance the home team ran, then the distance the opposing team ran would be somewhat random. So, between the two values there is no relationship.
