first split: (worse -vs- better):
if it was "worse", there would not be any surprise ---> D eliminated.
second split: (sick -vs- sickly):
both are adjectives, but sickly means "often sick".
"Sickly" slightly seems to be the intended meaning because it is discussing a long period of time "childhood" --> A & E eliminated
third split: (who were -vs- with a record):
whether being sickly or healthy should be at the same tense.
Using "had been sickly" with "were healthy" infers that one happened before the other. so "were" is not correct.
Using "with a record" escaped this problem ---> C eliminated
so B remained.

The trick of the question lies in knowing the difference between sick and sickly. 'Sick' signifies a trait of being tired of something. However the intention of the question is to convey ill nature among scientists, hence 'Sickly' is used. Also E couldn't be the answer because of 'who' which is ambiguous.
