Jane started baby-sitting when she was 18 years old. Whenever she baby-sat for a child, that child was no more than half her age at the time. Jane is currently 32 years old, and she stopped baby-sitting 10 years ago. What is the current age of the oldest person for whom Jane could have baby-sat?
A. 20
B. 21
C. 22
D. 23
E. 24
Alternate Approach :
Let Jane's age when she had baby-sit be J.
Then the current age of the oldest child: C = J/2 + (32-J).
On solving this, we get C=32-J/2.
As we can see from the equation that C will be max when J is min. Therefore, as min J is 18, hence Max C will be 23.
P.S. If asked for minimum age, it will simply be 10 years, as the last child that J baby-sit could be a new-born (there is no information on the minimum age of the child that she can baby-sit).
