Jeff drives three times farther in 36 minutes than what Amy drives in 30 minutes. If Jeff drives at a speed of 40 miles per hour, at what speed, in miles per hour, does Amy drive?

(A) 6
(B) 9
(C) 16
(D) 24
(E) 32

Let's say, Amy traveled Distance (D)= X ; Time (T)= 0.5h ; Rate (R)= X/0.5

For Jeff, D=3x ; T= 0.6h ; R= 3X/0.6 or 5x m/h

Given, Jeff's speed rate (R)= 40m/h = 5x
then, x= 40/5= 8

Then Amy's speed: X/0.5 or 8/0.5 = 80/5 = 16m/h

Jeff drives\(\frac{40}{60}\)miles per minute --> \(\frac{2}{3}\)miles per minute

Total distance Jeff travels \(\frac{2}{3}\)\(*36\)\(=24\)
Total distance Amy travels \(\frac{24}{3}\)\(=8\)

Amy's speed in minutes \(x*30=8\) \(-->\) \(\frac{8}{30}\) \(=\) \(\frac{4}{15}\)
Amy's speed in hours \(\frac{4}{15}\)\(*60\) \(=16\)

In 36 minutes Jeff drives 40 x 36/60 = 40 x 3/5 = 24 miles.

So in 30 minutes, or ½ hour, Amy drives 8 miles.

So her rate, in miles per hour, is:

8/(1/2) = 16 mph

Answer: C

Let, Distance driven by Amy = D

\(Distance = Speed*Time\)

\(D = S_A*(30/60)\)

\(3D = S_J*(36/60)\)

But \(S_J = 40\) miles per hour

therefore, \(3D = 40*(36/60)\)

i.e. \(D = 8\) miles

i.e. \(8 = S_A*(30/60)\)

i.e. \(S_A = 16\)

Answer: Option C
