Question: Average speed of John = ?
Statement 1: He drives the entire 120 miles (assuming it to be distance between A and B) in 3 hours.
Average Speed = Total Distance / Todal Time = 120/3 = 40
SUFFICIENT
Statement 2: Max speed = 50 and Min speed = 30
Average Speed = Total Distance / Todal Time and is not fnction of maximum speed or minimum speed hence
NOT SUFFICIENT

It says "entire" 120 miles. Hence, the entire distance is 120 miles. The total distance has been given and total time has been given. Hence, using this information we can find the average speed.
Average Speed = Total Distance / Total Time

Cannot find anything using this information.
Hence, STATEMENT (1) ALONE IS ENOUGH
