I think the correct answer is C.

1. Gives two solutions. (5,13) or (10,10)

2. Equal number of stamps.

'A' it is.

1) is sufficient to answer the question as we know the total sum ($ 4.40).

We have $ 0.15 stamp and $0.29 stamp.
In case with 0.29 stamp we must have the number of stumps that is divisible by 5 or by 10.
0.29 * 5 = $1.35;
4.40 - 1.35 = 3.05
3.05/0.15 can not be equal to an intiger, so 5*0.29 is out
only 10 $0.29 worth stamps left.
0.29*10=2.90
4.40-2.90 = 1.50 which gives us exactly 10 $0.15 worth stamps.

D for me


D is the wrong answer as we do not know the total sum from 'B' (she bought an equal number $0.15 and $0.29 stamps).
The information from 'B' gives us nothing, so 'B' by itself is not sufficient.

Oh shoot!! I miscalculated. You are right. Only one solution (10,10). And then the answer would be A. :(

for a

0.15x + 0.29 y = 440 we can't determine x

Stat 2 is a good hint to work out the numbers .15x +.29 y =4.40

The last digit of the total sum is 0. If you only buy 0.15 stamps you could only end up with 5 or 0. So for the total sum to be 0, the total money you spend with the 0.29 stamps has to end with 0 or 5. And that is only possible when the number of stamps are divisible by 5 or 10.
