Joseph Glatthaar’s Forged in Battle is not the first excellent study of Black soldiers and their White officers in the Civil War, but it uses more soldiers’ letters and diaries including rare material from Black soldiers—and concentrates more intensely on Black-White relations in Black regiments than do any of its predecessors. Glatthaar’s title expresses his thesis: loyalty, friendship, and respect among White officers and Black soldiers were fostered by the mutual dangers they faced in combat. Glatthaar accurately describes the government's discriminatory treatment of Black soldiers in pay, promotion, medical care, and job assignments, appropriately emphasizing the campaign by Black soldiers and their officers to get the opportunity to fight. That chance remained limited throughout the war by army policies that kept most Black units serving in rear-echelon assignments and working in labor battalions. Thus, while their combat death rate was only one-third that of White units, their mortality rate from disease, a major killer in this war, was twice as great. Despite these obstacles, the courage and effectiveness of several Black units in combat won increasing respect from initially skeptical or hostile White soldiers. As one White officer put it, “they have fought their way into the respect of all the army.” In trying to demonstrate the magnitude of this attitudinal change, however, Glatthaar seems to exaggerate the prewar racism of the White men who became officers in Black regiments. “Prior to the war,” he writes of these men, “virtually all of them held powerful racial prejudices.” While perhaps true of those officers who joined Black units for promotion or other self-serving motives, this statement misrepresents the attitudes of the many abolitionists who became officers in Black regiments. Having spent years fighting against the race prejudice endemic in American society, they participated eagerly in this military experiment, which they hoped would help African Americans achieve freedom and postwar civil equality. By current standards of racial egalitarianism, these men's paternalism toward African Americans was racist. But to call their feelings “powerful racial prejudices” is to indulge in generational chauvinism —to judge past eras by present standards. 1 1. For Question 7 - can you help me in understanding why option C is wrong

(C) Presenting a distorted view of the motives of certain individuals in order to provide grounds for a negative evaluation of their actions

C - Glatthaar is presenting distorted view (hidden intent) of the motives (officers who joined Black units for promotion or other self-serving motives) of certain individuals (perfect, not all individuals) in order to provide grounds for a negative evaluation of their actions (abolitionists did not have that intent) - basically saying given that 7 of 10 individuals have this view, all of 10 have the same intent.

Also, I read that we reject C because The author doesn???t accuse Glatthaar of distorting motives.

However, the option reads Presenting a distorted view which means the author never claims Glatthaar distorted their motives (why they joined) but just stated what really happenend i.e. mentioned facts, Glatthaar has not personal opinion in this is what the option mean according to me when it says "presenting"

Looking at your analysis of option C, I can see exactly where the confusion lies. Let me clarify the crucial distinction you're missing.

The Core Issue: Motives vs. Attitudes

Your interpretation has mixed up two completely different aspects:

What Option C Says:
"Presenting a distorted view of the motives of certain individuals"
→ This would mean Glatthaar distorts WHY these officers joined the Black regiments

What the Passage Claims Glatthaar Actually Does:
He exaggerates their racial attitudes/prejudices before the war
→ He's not discussing their motives for joining at all

Why C Fails:

Glatthaar never distorts anyone's motives for joining
The "negative evaluation" in C doesn't fit - Glatthaar actually praises these officers for changing
The distortion, mentioned in the passage, is about prewar racism levels, not reasons for enlisting

A distorted view is one that is misleading or false. The author says that some officers joined Black units for promotion or other self-serving motives. If that is in fact what happened, then describing in that way isn't distorted at all! Assuming the author's facts are correct, the view that some officials had hidden motives is accurate and, thus, not at all distorted.

In other words, you could say that the author presents an accurate view of the hidden motives of those officers, but presenting those facts doesn't involve any sort of distortion or error on the part of the author or Glatthaar.
