Let \(x\) be the initial number of hours. Then,
\(\frac{396}{x}+11=\frac{396}{x-6}\) (can be reduced by \(11\)).
\(\frac{36}{x}+1=\frac{36}{x-6}\)
It takes a lot time to solve this equation, so, just put the values and check the above equation. \(x\) must be \(18\).

Given:
- • Justin runs a car rental business, by renting cars on a fixed hourly rate
• Vicky rented a car from Justin, and paid the whole rent amount of $396, which is non-refundable
• Vicky pre-empt his renting tenure and returned the car 6 hours early – this resulted in an effective profit of $11 per hour for Justin.
To find:
- • Originally for how many hours Vicky rented the car
Approach and Working:
Let us assume that Vicky rented the car originally for t hours
- • Originally per hour earning for Justin = \(\frac{396}{t}\)
- • The new per hour earning for Justin = \(\frac{396}{(t – 6)}\)
• Given that, \(\frac{396}{(t – 6)} – \frac{396}{t} = 11\)
Or, \(36 [\frac{1}{(t – 6)} – \frac{1}{t}] = 1\)
Or, \(36 [t – (t – 6)] = t (t – 6)\)
Or, \(t^2 – 6t – 216 = 0\)
Or, \(t^2 – 18t + 12t – 216 = 0\)
Or, \((t – 18) (t + 12) = 0[\)
Hence, the correct answer is option D.

Important Observation Related to Article
• One does not need to assume two separate variables - for earning per hour and total hours - to solve this question.
• After forming the equations, with the help of options also one can get the answer, if it becomes difficult to solve the equation.
