Kudos for a correct solution.


1. 2+9+7+3+6=27=9; 29736 is divisible by 9. Therefore k has to either be 0 or a multiple of 9 to keep N divisible by 9.
k cannot be 0 and the only multiple of 9 between 1 and 9 is 9.
Therefore, k=9

2. N = 29740--->k=4
OR N = 29745--->k=9

Not Sufficient.

(1) N is divisible by 9

N = 29736 + k is divisible by 9
as 29736 is divisible by 9 so K should be divisible by 9 .
only K=0,9 fits into criteria . but given is 1<=K<=9 , so K=9 .
Sufficient.

(2) N is divisible by 5

K can be 4 , 9
Not sufficient.

Kudos for a correct solution.


1) For N to be divisible by 9,
The sum of the digits must be divisible by 9.
2+9+7+3+6 = 27. So from 1 to 9, the only value K can take so that N is divisible by 9 is 9 itself so sum of digits is 36.

hence k = 9
Sufficient Alone.

2) For N to be divisible by 5, K can be 4 as 29740 or k can be 9 as 29745, both are divisible by 5.
Clearly insufficient.

Hence Option 1 alone is sufficient.

K can be anything from 1to9; N=29736+K
Add up all the digits of N=27+K
1. N is divisible by 9; to be divisible by 9 sum of the digits should be divisible by 9. So K can have only value as 9 so that N can be divisible by 9. Sufficient
2. N is divisible by 5; to be divisible by 5 last digit can be 0 or 5, so K can have two values 4 or 9. So not sufficient
Hence answer is A
